Point-to-point survey notes

What to capture on site before anyone orders radios or an enclosure.

A useful survey is a short packet, not a novel.

Both ends

  • Photos toward the far end from the proposed mount.
  • Roof, wall, or pole construction — what you can actually lag into.
  • Power available (AC, existing PoE, none).
  • Grounding and surge path, even if it is “we need to add it.”

The path

  • Distance (map is fine; a rangefinder is better).
  • Trees, buildings, and anything that might grow or get built.
  • Frequency constraints if the site is noisy or licensed.

The LAN

  • What the hop is for (cameras, office, both).
  • Switch and VLAN on each side.
  • Throughput you actually need, not the radio’s brochure max.

If you cannot collect this, send us the photos and a pin on a map. That is enough to say whether a hop is plausible before you spend on dishes.
